The paper analyses the feasibility and advisability of using the theory of marginal utility to justify the employee’s working hours per day. The main hypothesis of the research is the following. Workflow (or hiring) of a person can be considered as a kind of act of sharing resources (goods) , each of which has a certain value for a person: the individual exchanges of my free time (which is a certain value) to a material reward (which also has a certain value). Building on the theory of marginal utility, it is possible to assert that such an exchange will be performed as long as the total utility of free time will not exceed the total remuneration utility. This means that it is possible to determine the optimal distribution of the general fund of free time in which the total remuneration utility and remaining useful time is maximized. The paper analyses the working day optimization process from the perspective of utility theory. There was developed a model for the use of the marginal utility theory in solving the problem by optimizing the length of the working day and the approbation of the developed model for the real world. For the proposed dependencies there can be formulated general utility function of each of the factors (exchange objects). In this, utility function will have the form factor for the free time - quadratic function, for remuneration - a linear function. Thus, the total accumulated utility of the combined use of both types of benefits will be a quadratic function. Such a function can be studied using standard methods of algebraic analysis of the availability and value optimization. As a result, you can get a free distribution of the free working time fund at which the total sum for the individual utility is maximized. The above proposed approach was tested for the conditions of Ukraine's economy basing on the official statistics. It should be noted that the result has been calculated for the average wage worker in Ukraine. At the same time the actual wages of workers are very different from the average values. Within the limits that were set during the study, it was concluded that an increase in wages (at a constant level of minimum subsistence level) will reduce the optimal duration of the working day. Changing the coefficients of total utility will only happen when the performance of stagnant - hour wage and the minimum subsistence level (or minimum wage). Application of the model developed in a particular enterprise involves the need to determine the actual level of the minimum wage for specific conditions: region, industry, enterprise, profession, etc. Using the proposed approach makes it possible not only to determine the optimal length of the workday, but also solve the inverse problem - to establish the necessary level of worker's pay in order to encourage him to intensive productive work during the workday. While at the enterprise level management receives an opportunity to optimize the use of labor resources in several ways: 1) changing the mode of operation of employees and hours of work (within the law), and 2) changing the form used in the enterprise and the wage system, and 3) optimizing the size wage workers. Promising direction in the development of the proposed model is its expansion by taking into account additional factors - a worker’s (an economically active individual’s) inclination to the accumulation and investment
