Abstract

This paper presents a new method for vectorisation of binary bitmap images by so-called engraving. Engraving is a union of a finite number of fat curves ("curve having a width" - it is the trace left by a moving circle of a variable radius). The paper describes a Bézier representation for fat curves and discusses the approach for the approximation of arbitrary bitmap binary images by engraving through their continuous skeletons.
